Originally there were no launch pads, and you had to pearl, however this was changed after staff added launchpads.

Pearl prices rose in last winter of 2020 when the xmas 2020 tag came out. In order to get this tag, in the beginning you needed pearls. Since everyone wanted it people would buy pearls at crazy high prices because people needed them for the tag. The economy just never settled down after this.

I agree with terry's suggestion. It seems so much better because for some people it can be a lot harder to rank up from noob to rookie whereas a set amount of playtime means less trolls while allowing those people who still may find it difficult to rank up still have a chance.
