Dirt Blocks into Grass

I have an island with SO MUCH DIRT. I can't figure out how or if I can turn these dirt blocks into grass cause its really annoying not being able to grow grass or flowers in these areas. it also just l;ooks bad... Can someone please tell me if its possible to make these blocks grass or if I have to just buy the grass blocks and replace them?

I swear there used to be a mechanic for bone mealing grass, if that doesn't work you can just let them grow eventually

Please note that you can definitely turn your dirt into grass. If you have a lot of light and 1 grass block next to dirt, it should spread. The other way is right clicking on a dirt block with seed(s)
