How to stop villagers from despawning?

I spawned two villagers with eggs in an enclosed area in claimed land with lecterns to try getting mending books but they both despawned after about a minute. When the first one despawned I spawned a second one and named it with a name tag but then that one despawned too. Can anyone tell me why? And I guess in the mean time also tell me other ways to get mending books lol, I haven't seen any in ah for a while.

Villagers are super broken on this server. Just keep their chunk unloaded at all times unless you're doing trading.
