Hello!
To my knowledge, it is to encourage more people to join the community discord server, in exchange for rewards in-game! Doing this would also make it a little more difficult for people to claim rewards on alts, which I believe may also be part of the reason it is required.
All-in-all, there isn't an officially listed reason - so, I would have to assume it's just to grow the discord server. :D
