Use 1.8.1. No problems using that version. Again, like fast said you might have to reinstall everything. Bur if you try connecting on 1.8.1, you should not run into problems. Also check your interenet connections. If you have really crap internet connections, it may not allow you to connect. You shoul be at least within 15 feet of your interenet router to get good reception.

It was fixed? Nate was stuck in a corrupted chunk and the chunk was restored.
